Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tropical evergreen related to the coffee plant that is native to Southeast Asia. It has a long history as medicinal use for a variety of purposes such as: treating cough, diarrhea, insomnia, opioid withdrawal and curbing other addictions, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, or boost energy, focus, and creativity.

Kratom was first introduced in the United States in the late 1990s, and grew exponentially in the mid 2010s. By 2020, Kratom has become a $1.13 billion dollar industry in the US with an estimate of 15 million people using kratom. 

Kratom leaves are harvested at optimal times depending on the maturity of the leaf in the plants growth cycle where the Alkaloids are most potent. The leaves are then dried and powdered, and can be used in capsules, extracts and tea. 

Dosing in Grams:

< 2 = micro

2-6 = low

6-8 = high

8+ = heavy

The balance of alkaloid levels in kratom leaves will shift as it matures, ultimately determining the “strains” (more about these in another post!). These alkaloids in the Kratom influences the brain’s opioid receptors, (which is why it may assist with opioid withdrawals and addictions) and is processed through the body’s liver.

Because of this, and the effects someone may experience with it, the DEA has this listed as a “Drug of Concern” but remains largely unregulated at this time. Possible side effects may include - nausea, or a headache (typically from dehydration). It may help to avoid drinking on an empty stomach, be sure to drink plenty of water, avoid mixing with alcohol. Although rare, more serious side effects are possible. It’s not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

As the Kratom plant matures, the balance of alkaloid levels in kratom leaves will shift, ultimately determining the “strains” - each having varying effects. The primary alkaloids in kratom are Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine. The percentage of each of these alkaloids in relation to the other may have varying effects in the body.

The White Strain is the youngest, therefore has a ratio with a higher Mitragynine Alkaloid, thus encouraging a stimulant like effect. This strain may aid in focus, creativity, and energize (naturally caffeine free) and is often times used as a pre-workout.

The Green Strain of Kratom is more mature than the White, therefore having less Mitragynine and more 7-Hydroxymitragynine Alkaloids. This will be a nearly equal balance of the two. Because of this, it tends to have milder effects as the White, which may include a creative and energy boost, but also may be more euphoric and uplift mood. 

The Red Strain utilizes the most mature Kratom Leaves as it is most potent in 7-Hydroxymitragynine Alkaloid. This strain has more sedative properties and may help ease anxiety symptoms, may provide some pain relief, and aid in sleep. Because of these qualities, it’s recommended to enjoy this in the evening.

The Gold (or Yellow) Strain of Kratom is different than the others - this is typically a mixture of the Red and Green Strains. The Kratom goes through a specific indoor drying process after harvesting, which it develops a rich golden color. This unique strain shares many qualities of the Red and you may experience reduction in anxiety and tension, and mild pain relief. It may also improve stress management, mental clarity & concentration, uplift mood, decrease mental fog. Overall, a great “feel good” option and my personal favorite.
